  • ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: LUKE CHUEH

Luke Chueh has perfected the art of painting emotionless bears with sad empty eyes that stare directly into your soul, and we love him for that! That's why we're highlighting his art this week, we dig what he does and how he does it. But he likes to paint other things too, usually mishmoshing bad jokes with pop-culture references.

Boba by Luke Chueh (Get it?) 😜

Luke is as about as cool as his art, which is to say very! Don't believe me? Check out this video of Luke talking about his latest release with Prints On Wood, The Nose Knows (Get it?) 😏 ...

If that thrilling and informative vignette has wet your whistle, then guess what, you just hit the art-nerd jackpot! We still got a few The Nose Knows prints available, including the big 'ol honking one from DCON. Although if you're more of a Luke traditionalist and are looking for something... oh, I don't know... white bear / thousand-yard-stare, then we got something for you too!

  • D-CON 2016 RECAP

If you've been following along. D-CON 2016 has come and gone, but all the fun still lives on in our hearts! Why? Because it was awesome, that’s why! What was so awesome about it you might ask?

    dcon1

Pictured Above: This is why I'm broke.

If you’ve ever been to Comic-Con before they started air-dropping celebrities in to promote their lackluster super hero cross-over movie sequels, the edges of the convention center would have more homegrown offerings ranging from cool posters to collectible toys.

    dcon2

Batman and Robin looking a little.... ambiguous.

As Comic-Con began to grow in popularity, so did the big corporations and their booths. This expansion started to push out the smaller vendors to the point where all that’s remaining of the art-geek scene congregated into a small sliver roughly 3 aisles wide, in addition to a handful of booths peppered across the entire convention center.

    dcon3

Pictured Above: The intellectual equivalent of my teenage mind.

Sure, standing for line for 4 hours to get Nicolas Cage to sign your t-shirt is fun and all, but for me, the best part of Comic-Con was looking for neat things to slap on my wall or pose on my bookcase. To make a long-boring story short, Designer Con is awesome because it takes that small sliver of indie artists, custom vinyl toys, and all sorts of one of a kind art and wraps an entire convention around it.

    dcon4

    If advertisers we're honest.

Spanning over 90,000 square feet, D-CON packs a myriad of Artists from all walks of life… be it graffiti, low-brow, toys, or clothing, you’re guaranteed to see someone you recognize if you’re into this sort of thing. If you’re not, then we promise you’ll still see all sorts of awesome merch and collectibles.

    dcon5

Don't know what that is... but I WANT one!

As a sponsor of the event and also a vendor, we at PRINTS ON WOOD always feel at home when we attend. Granted, we sell limited edition art prints, but more-so because at heart, we’re all a bunch of art-nerds! Best part is we got to spend an entire weekend with some of our favorite artists!

    dcon6

    D-CON / PRINTS ON WOOD Booth 2016

This year we had some of the biggest names from the industry were signing their exclusive POW/D-CON limited editions prints at our booth. Saturday we had the pleasure of hosting ...

KMNDZ (signing prints based off of his live painted piece from last year's D-Con)

    dcon10_matt

and Matt Gondek, "blowing it up" at our booth (Haha... get it?)

Sundays at D-CON are always a little more chill, but just as much fun. We had Tara McPherson kick it at our booth, promoting her awesome print release, The Fountain.

    dcon11_tara

Last, but certainly never to be considered the least, we had Jermaine Rogers signing his exclusive D-CON/POW wood print, Tell Me How To Help You...

    dcon12_jermaine

While we love all those people and think they're super cool, we have to be honest. They weren't the only important guests at our booth this year. That's right. The people that make us the happiest at D-CON this year, and every year, is ALL OF YOU!

    dcon13_fans

    Pictured Above: Some of you!

Prints On Wood wants to thank each and every one of you who came by our booth at D-CON 2016. Those of you who bought a print, shook our hand, asked for a sticker, told us we had a cool logo, and yes... even those of you who rolled your eyes when we told you how much some of the bigger prints cost! You are what makes this company and what we do great!

    dcon13_fam

Although we've got a lot of people on the inside who help with that too!

    --------------------

For those of you who couldn't make it out this year, stay  tuned to Prints On Wood as we'll start release some of our limited edition, exclusive D-CON wood prints shortly!

  • DesignerCon 2016

For the past few weeks, our staff has been hard at work with assisting various artists print their artwork on wood pieces to prepare for DesignerCon.

DesignerCon is an annual art and design convention that will feature collectible toys, customs, plush, designer apparel - as well as urban, underground, and pop art. Artists and designers will be able set up their own booths and showcase their artwork and designs. This year, DCon will take place on November 19-20, and will feature over 150+ artists.

With Designer Con quickly approaching, many artists have asked for our help with creating wood prints. Typically, these artists send us their designs and we take care of the rest of the work.

Why wood prints? Well to start, they're a truly unique canvas that adds another beautiful dimension to artwork. It enhances and transforms the original piece with a natural, more vintage feel. The wood grain gives the artwork a unique appearance, so in a way - no two pieces are the same. Printing art on wood creates a durable, beautiful image that these artists can proudly display anywhere.

The photos above are just a few examples of the awesome pieces we've created for previous artists. These pieces will be displayed at DesignerCon, so keep an eye out while you're there!

If you're an artist and you want to see what the hype about printing on wood is about, contact us or check out our website for more information! You won't regret it!

  • PRINTS ON WOOD: D-CON 2016

For our third year in a row, PRINTS ON WOOD is rocking the house at D-CON 2016!

    dcon_logo

What is D-CON you might ask? Besides sounding like a Transformer with a 2.0 grade average, D-CON actually stands for DESIGNER CON. Although that might sound like a bunch of bearded hipsters wearing plaid shirts, congregating at their local coffee shop to argue the merits of Arial Vs. Helvetica, I assure you it’s way less pretentious than it sounds!

    punchable_face

Underneath that man-bun, he’s secretly judging your font choices.

D-CON is kind of like Comic Con... minus the long lines, summer heat, and gender neutral / body positive cosplay. It’s an annual art and design convention taking place November 19th & 20th at the Pasadena Convention Center, featuring 150 different Comic Book Artists, Graffiti Artists, and… uh.. Artist Artists. The best part is that all these weird wonderful people get together to sell awesome looking toys, posters, dolls, t-shirts, and… *drumroll*... PRINTS ON WOOD!!!

  • Ron English "NeoNature" Opening @ Corey Helford Gallery

    ron-english-neonature-corey-helford6

NeoNature, a colorful dive through the mind of contemporary pop illustrator, Ron English, opened this Saturday, December 12th, at the newly unwrapped Arts District location of Los Angeles' Corey Helford Gallery.

On view now till January 9th, the premier show centers around the theme of evolution— described by the show's press release as "the flaw that propels civilization." Showcased throughout the body of work, English offers up a multitude of mediums to make his point, ranging from paintings on canvas, to sculptural figures to poignant pieces of performance art depicting what appears to be an evolved species of gun-wielding cow.

Within the show, English offers his adaptation of the concept of 'evolution,' breaking down what the word means for an array of creatures; expect diabolical looking chihuahuas and ruinous reptiles among others.  In his usual fashion, English bites off a fantastically large existential topic, producing work surrounding the notion of evolution that is of course elite in its execution and mastery, but is wild, absurd and completely punk rock.

Attended by hundreds, the show brought out many appreciated attendees from the curious general public, to collectors and local artists. The crowd that night included POW artists Greg "Craola" Simkins, Lola and Luke Chueh, as well contemporary favorites Shepard Fairey, Gary Baseman, Brandi Milne, Shag, Korin Faught and Natalia Fabia.

For a taste of the show's progressive content, and to catch the waves of few underlying social, cultural and political themes, scroll below. Also, to view and purchase exclusive POW x Ron English prints, view the artist's catalog of available collaborations here.

  • "The Soundtrack (To My Life)" Release

Luke Chueh Soundtrack to my life wood print

Luke Chueh is an L.A based artist who is particularly popular in the pop surrealism scene and part of the designer toy world.

    LukeChueh_Signing_Printonwood4

We had the privilege to work with Luke Chueh, to print one of his most famous pieces, "The Soundtrack (To My Life)" on wood. This piece, created in 2005, is celebrating it's 10th anniversary with the release for this piece. The Soundtrack (To My Life) was a very important painting for Luke Chueh, as it resembled the beginning of his career and a reflection of himself as an artist. To know more about Chueh's story behind this piece, click the link below.

We strive to make sure every fine art print is printed as if it were our own. We believe working hand in hand with the artist personally puts depth and meaning into every art piece. Last week Luke stopped by the shop to sign the prints and check out the new frame option.

    LukeChueh_Signing_Printonwood6

As Luke Chueh released these prints on Tuesday, June 23rd at noon, the time has finally come for those of you who have already ordered! These limited edition wood prints will be shipping out by this week. For those of you who have not ordered them yet, there are still a few left on our webpage linked below.

    LukeChueh_Signing_Printonwood_frame

We were excited to announce our new frame option at Prints on Wood with this release. Luke Chueh was the first to use our frame feature with "The Soundtrack (To My Life)" print. The optional custom white frame can be added to the print for an additional $45. Not only is it available for this specific art piece, but it will also soon become an option available for every wood print on our create your own prints page.

    LukeChueh_Signing_Printonwood5

You got to admit, adding a white frame not only makes it easier to hang on your wall, but it also gives it a nice sleek design.

  • 10th Anniversary of The Soundtrack (To My Life) by Luke Chueh

Ten years ago this year Luke Chueh was asked by L. Croskey, aka Mr. Numbera of Cannibal Flower, to design a cover for his mix cd.  What came out of that collaboration has resonated with so many including us.   The Soundtrack (To My Life) is a homage to what DJ culture meant to Luke while at the same time connecting with us in a strikingly personal way.

    Luke-Cheuh_Framed_STTML_03

In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the piece, Luke is releasing a special wood print edition of 150 on Tuesday, June 23rd at noon PST.  The 18" x 18" wood print will be hand signed and numbered by Luke Cheuh available at $250 each.  For the first time, an optional custom white frame can be added to the print for an additional $45.
