Good Beer, Good Printing on Wood

What better way to showcase this fantastic Southern California local beer than to print some of their most famous offerings on FSC certified wood. If you’re native to So Cal, you’ve probably seen these awesome marketing pieces on display locally in restaurants that serve Hangar 24 on tap. We printed these fine point-of-sale wood prints for three specific Hangar 24 beers: Amarillo Pale Ale, Columbus IPA, and Double IPA.

As you can see the Hangar 24’s artwork is absolutely perfect for printing on wood. The negative space allows the grain of the wood to show through, something that complements the art style beautifully. The corners of each piece were finished with a rounded edge giving it a refined look that is suitable for any display location.

Okay enough about the wood, tell me about the beer!

Amarillo Pale Ale: A true classic, an “American Pale Ale.” Smooth, balanced and resinous with flavors and aromas rooted from Midwestern malted barley. With its carefully selected hops and post fermentation processes, the Amarillo Pale Ale “breaks the mold” of traditional Pale Ales. As far as Pale Ales go, this one has deep flavor without the bitterness that many people associate with “ales of kin.”

Columbus IPA: A single hop, American style IPA that features 100% Columbus Hops. The result is complex and what can only be described as “an intense citrus, floral and spicy aroma and flavor.” Refreshing and satisfying, and a must drink IPA for those looking for a “dry hopped” finish.

Double IPA: Hangar 24’s “gift to beer lovers.” This IPA is described as a beautifully balanced brew that is a sensational balance of five malts and four distinct American hops. Luckily, for all the fans of this assertive and drinkable “sensory overload” of an IPA, this beer is brewed regularly throughout the year and when weather permits.

Custom Wood Printing for Point of Sale (POS) Displays

Printing on wood is something that has been around for quite some time and using wood for point-of-sale displays has been a favorite of many simply because of its durability and cost. Some of the most popular applications of wood prints and point-of-sale displays have been in retail marketing for niche products. The organic look and feel of a printed wood display is very appealing to companies who appreciate branding with organic tones.

All beer descriptions were taken from information presented at Hangar 24 website.

Custom Wood Print – Lance Armstrong Livestrong

This was something we printed directly on wood a few years back. It was actually just a test print on a scratch piece of wood and not meant for anything, but it turned out so cool that we thought we’d photograph it just for reference and to showcase what really good art looks like when printed on wood.

The artwork was for a huge billboard banner that we printed to promote the Livestrong campaign. For those that can’t tell, Shepard Fairey is the man behind the artwork. We knew this piece wood look amazing printed on wood. The colors are super vibrant and the “non-color” or negative space in the piece allows for the wood grain to shine through and fill in where color is absent. As you can see the end result was a show quality piece on plywood. Sadly, since it was just a test print, the piece now lives in a scrap pile in the back of our shop.

THIS PIECE IS NOT FOR SALE – JUST SHOWN HERE AS AN EXAMPLE

Printing directly on plywood

The idea of printing directly on plywood is not a new one. We have been doing it for years. Everything from point of purchase POP displays for retail stores to one-off artist prints for gallery exhibitions. The process is fairly straight-forward. We can print art in bulk quantities – the same artwork printed many times on a full 4-foot by 8-foot piece of plywood – OR in short run quantities on smaller, pre-cut sizes made to order.

It’s all in the grain

The wood grain tells a story on its own. When the wood grain comes through in the prints it sets a subtle organic tone to the piece – something natural yet non-natural at the same time. One could easily argue that the grain patterns themselves are noteworthy of attention, but the combination of both wood grain and custom artwork is what makes the art really stand out, almost transforming it sometimes. And better yet, since wood grain patterns are like fingerprints, each piece printed on wood, regardless if it was printed in bulk or not, is a unique and one-of-a-kind print. Awesome!

We printed this back in June 2011 for the folks that run the Sea No Evil Art Show, a fundraiser benefit to raise money for the Sea Shepherd cause. The artwork was done by Jeff Soto. The wood it was printed on was FSC certified maple. There were two versions of this custom wood print, one limited edition wood print that was signed by the artist and another open edition wood print that was available for a cheaper price that came without a signature.

Response to this piece was huge and it literally sold-out in a matter of days. There still may be a few open edition prints left, but the Soto collectors gobbled up all the signed versions before the art show was over.

Custom Wood Prints

The Wood Printing Process

In short, the wood prints are created in batches, either one-off pieces or bulk quantities of the same piece. All the wood we use is FSC certified and hand-picked for overall quality, look and feel. Ink is literally printed directly on the wood and then UV cured to dry and finish the ink. This means you can clean the piece without ruining the artwork. See care details for more info.

The Awesome Results

The end result is an awesome, one-of-a-kind custom wood print that is an instant showcase-ready piece to hang on the wall. Photos look amazing and vector art looks mind-blowing. Checkout the store and see how you can upload your own artwork to be printed on wood or choose from our limited edition and exclusive artist prints on wood.

Custom wood printing never looked this good!

Wood Art Prints Just Got Better

Our motto: Your Art, You Way. Many think that poster paper and other paper-based substrates are their only option when it comes to having their art blown up on to hang on the wall or in a gallery. Well… think again. Now you can print your artwork directly on wood.
